MVA - Motor Vehicle Accident Assessment and Treatment

In addition to suffering from physical injuries, many victims of automobile accidents find it difficult to regulate their thoughts, feelings, mood, and behaviour following a collision. They may feel anxious, depressed, hypervigilant, agitated, or numb. Many have problems with sleep, memory, attention, and concentration. They may be forgetful or internally preoccupied, phobic, and fearful.
People closest to them may notice them being more irritable and sensitive, which can cause problems with family members and coworkers.
Consequently, car accident victims may increasingly withdraw from people and become more isolated and avoid many activities they once enjoyed and did with ease (e.g., driving, socializing, functioning well at school or work). If they were physically injured, acute pain and somatic complaints often make the psychological trauma of the accident even worse.

What is an MVA Assessment and How can it help?

A Motor Vehicle Accident Assessment investigate the existence, nature and degree of psychological dysfunction that may have resulted directly or indirectly from an individual’s car accident. We try to understand the pre and post-accident level of functioning. This is to help the victim to return to pre accident level of functioning.
An MVA assessment could provide the client with feedback regarding their present emotional status as well as treatment recommendations, should they be necessary, that might advance their return to premorbid functioning.
A comprehensive driving assessment is tailored to individuals who have suffered the consequences of a traumatic motor vehicle accident. We assist drivers and passengers to regain their confidence in a vehicle again along with working with their other concerns, which one may have after an accident. Why seek counselling after a Motor Vehicle Accident?

Reasons to seek counselling after a car accident:

  • There is an increased risk for serious psychological problems e.g. PTSD, Depression etc.
  • Counselling provides prevention of symptoms exacerbation.
  • Assistance with the expected or unexpected emotions that may come up after the accident.

Following an accident, these experiences are normal. However, they may have significant impact on your mental health and your ability to achieve quality of life. Psychological assessment and counselling can give you the support needed towards achieving mental wellness and regaining a sense of control in your life.

How can we help?

Through counselling with a mental health professional, you can gain support towards achieving mental wellness and regaining a sense of control in your life through:

  • Helping you identify the changes and challenges you are experiencing,
  • Advocating for your identified needs,
  • Providing strategies to help you positively manage the changes and challenges, and
  • Supporting you towards your goals
